Veterinary Assisting

If you love being around animals but don’t have the inclination to go to veterinary school, you can still have a job that can make a big difference in the lives of ailing pets—as a Veterinary Assistant.

As a Veterinary Assistant, you will be responsible for feeding, watering, and examining pets and other non-farm animals for signs of illness, disease, or injury in laboratories, animal hospitals, and clinics. Clean and disinfect cages and work areas, and sterilize laboratory and surgical equipment.

Occasionally, Veterinary Assistants may provide routine post-operative care, administer medication orally or topically, or prepare samples for laboratory examination under the supervision of veterinary or laboratory animal technologists or technicians, veterinarians, or scientists.
