Medical Scribe Certification Exam (MSCE)
Why seek AHDPG Certification?
Earning your Certified Medical Scribe Professional (CMSP) credential makes you a recognized expert and leader in the field of medical scribing—and a valuable asset to your organization, keeping you and your organization more competitive in today’s economy. This professional distinction sets you apart from your colleagues, proving your high level of knowledge and skills.
The profession is not just about what you know but rather how you effectively implement that knowledge in the workplace each and every day. The AMSP/CMSP certifications provide you the opportunity to prove not only what you know but also how you can apply that knowledge on the job.
The Medical Scribe Certification Exam (MSCE) directly links to on-the-job scenarios and realistic work situations, making it the most relevant certification available for medical scribe professionals.
Certification as a medical scribe must be as inclusive and diverse as the profession itself. Built by industry experts, these certifications are applicable across our diverse industry, employer types, settings of care, and specialties. No matter the focus of your organization there is a universal set of skills necessary to effectively practice as a certified medical scribe.
Focused on Advancement
The AMSP and CMSP credentials are based on the rapidly evolving work environment, focusing on the competencies and knowledge medical scribe professionals need. Boost your confidence to take that next step in your medical scribe career or distinguish yourself in a job search.
Based on in-depth research, the AMSP and CMSP credentials reflect what professional medical scribes need to know to be leaders in their organizations and in the profession.
AHDPG is a globally recognized provider of healthcare documentation services, staffing, and training.
Because Patients and Healthcare Clinicians Depend on You
Certification in healthcare documentation makes a difference to the patients whose care depends on your precise documentation, to employers who must hire highly qualified and trusted medical scribes, and to you for the satisfaction of attaining certification. The four letters that will follow your name will make a powerful statement about the expertise you bring to the table.
Why is Certification Important to Health Care?
Healthcare documentation involves a highly interpretive skill set, where medical scribes partner with clinicians to create an accurate reflection of a patient care encounter. It requires a foundational understanding of the diagnostic process, clinical medicine, treatment, and care to be interpreted accurately and applied within the context of ever increasing complex patient encounters.
Medical scribes cannot bring that interpretive skill set to the table without a significant foundation of knowledge and training. The pace at which healthcare delivery is moving does not provide space for on-the-job training or mentoring. Such an unregulated training scenario creates unpredictable and dangerous gaps of knowledge that impacts the interpretive process and limits the ability of the medical scribe to facilitate quality patient care. Identifying gaps, inconsistencies, and discrepancies in the health record is the guardian role of the medical scribe, and clinicians rely on the keen eyes, ears, and interpretive mind of the medical scribe to ensure that health data is captured and recorded accurately, that inconsistencies are addressed, and that the record is authenticated by the clinician.
The only way to ensure that a medical scribe candidate can be entrusted with that role is to hold the workforce accountable to a defined scope of practice through benchmark testing and certification.

AHDPG offers a voluntary credentialing exam to individuals who wish to demonstrate job readiness and level-specific competency to prospective employers, clients, and industry colleagues. In offering the credentialing exam for medical scribes, we are protecting the public interest by promoting professional standards, improving the practice of medical scribes, and recognizing those professionals who demonstrate competency through the fulfillment of stated requirements.
This exam consists of 100 multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank questions. Both assessment types are used to test each candidate’s knowledge and applied interpretive judgment in all knowledge domains represented on the Medical Scribe job description and the MSCE Exam Blueprint.
The practical exam questions are designed to test a candidate’s knowledge, skill, and ability to work as a medical scribe effectively in today’s healthcare environment. Take our Online Practice Exam
You will be tested on potential content domains from the exam blueprint to give you an overall impression of exam scope and format, and to acclimate you with the testing environment. At the end of the practice exam you will receive your score, so you will know how you did right away!
This practice exam costs $19.95 and provides a sampling of 25 questions only and is not the full certification exam. Your performance on the practice exam does not guarantee a particular outcome when testing for your certification. A passing score on the practice exam does not qualify you for the AMSP or CMSP credential.
After Earning Your Credential
Upon successfully passing your credentialing exam, you will be recognized as either a Apprentice Medical Scribe Professional (AMSP) or a Certified Medical Scribe Professional (CMSP) depending upon the number of hours of front-line, on-the-job medical scribe experience you possess. Upon successful completion of the Medical Scribe Certification Exam you will receive a certificate that shows the date that the credential is valid.
Your credential will be valid for two years. Before your certification expires, you will need to recertify. Recertification requires you to successfully complete the necessary number of continuing education credits (CECs) or retake the Certified Medical Scribe Exam.

Can I Contest My Exam Results?
The only grounds for contesting an exam result is in the event of unforeseen technical or logistical difficulties that may have compromised your exam session. If you feel this has been the case for your exam session, you should email us immediately and the technical log of your exam session will be reviewed to determine if your exam was in fact compromised. If your session was deemed to have been compromised by a significant technical or logistical problem (this does not include internet connectivity issues, which are the responsibility of the candidate), AHDPG may opt to allow you to retake the exam at no additional charge. Given your exposure to the exam, you would still not be eligible to reschedule for 30 days.
We will not review for any reason the exam results of a first-time candidate. We will not respond to complaints or inquiries about failed exams on a first attempt. If you have failed the Medical Scribe Certification Exam more than once, you may request a review of your exam file and general feedback on areas for improvement.
