Externships
Students in AHDPG‑coordinated externships must provide safe, supervised care, respect all patient rights, and strictly protect patient confidentiality; serious violations can lead to immediate removal from the site and dismissal from the program.
Patient Care and Rights
- Provide care only as assigned, under supervision, and within the externship site’s policies and your training level.
- Treat patients with dignity and respect, follow all safety and infection‑control procedures, and honor any site rules about patients declining student participation.
Confidentiality
- Comply with HIPAA and all site privacy rules; access patient information only for legitimate care and never share it with unauthorized persons or on social media.
- Do not copy, photograph, or remove patient records or use identifiable details in schoolwork or job materials unless fully de‑identified and explicitly permitted by the site.
Reporting
- Immediately report any patient harm, near‑miss, or confidentiality breach to the on‑site supervisor and your AHDPG Instructor and cooperate with all reviews.
Consequences
- Consequences may include warning, remediation, probation, removal from the site, failure of the externship, or dismissal from the program, depending on severity and intent.
