Externship Program
As part of your training in one of our healthcare career programs, you have the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience through our optional, but highly recommended, Clinical Externship. This externship allows you to apply the knowledge and skills you’ve learned in a real-world medical setting, providing you with practical experience that will support your certification and enhance your employment prospects.
What is the Clinical Externship?
Upon successful completion of the online training program, you are eligible to participate in a Clinical Externship. The externship is an unpaid, supervised rotation that can range from 40 to 160 hours, depending on the career path chosen. During this externship, you will have the chance to work directly with patients and healthcare professionals, practicing a variety of procedures under supervision.
Benefits of the Clinical Externship
The externship provides a twofold benefit:
- Hands-on Training: You’ll gain practical experience that supports both your certification process and future job search.
- Connection with Employers: This opportunity serves as a bridge to local healthcare employers, offering valuable networking and exposure to potential job opportunities in your area.
Requirements and Terms for Participation
To ensure your success in the Clinical Externship, certain terms and conditions apply:
- Resume Submission: Within three weeks of being contacted by the Externship Coordinator, you must provide an up-to-date resume. Failure to do so will result in ineligibility for the externship.
- Availability and Scheduling: All externship opportunities are subject to the facility’s availability, scheduling needs, and staffing requirements.
- Transportation: You are responsible for your own transportation to and from the externship facility.
- Attendance and Punctuality: Consistent attendance and punctuality are required during your externship. This includes adherence to the facility’s professional standards, dress code, hygiene practices, and other policies.
- No Employment Guarantee: Please note, the externship is a volunteer position. The healthcare facility is under no obligation to offer you employment or any employment-related benefits following your externship experience.
- Documentation: Additional documents may be required by the externship site, such as health records, immunizations, drug screenings, and criminal background checks.
Eligibility for Externship Participation
To participate in the externship, students must meet the following requirements:
- Complete the program with a final exam grade of 70% or higher and a course average of 70% or higher.
- Complete at least 50 hours of coursework in the program.
Is an Externship Position Guaranteed?
While we work diligently to coordinate externship opportunities for all eligible students, we cannot guarantee placement due to factors outside our control, including:
- Limited healthcare facilities in rural areas.
- Changes to facility operations due to unforeseen events like pandemics, natural disasters, or other disruptions.
- Non-compliance with program requirements by students, such as failure to submit a resume or adhere to outlined policies.
That said, we have successfully coordinated externships for all eligible students over the past eight years, even during challenging circumstances like the pandemic.
