Career Outlook
Phlebotomists are health professionals who draw blood from patients or blood donors for medical testing. They can also prepare and process blood tests. Since bloodwork is often the least favorite part of a trip to the doctor’s office, it takes a skilled phlebotomist to know how to handle each patient and situation. The Phlebotomy technician has direct contact with patients and must create an atmosphere of trust and confidence while explaining procedures, taking blood pressure, pulse, and respiration readings, and drawing blood specimens skillful, safe, and accurate.
Phlebotomists work in various health facilities, including hospitals, clinics, general practitioners’ offices, and inpatient and outpatient facilities. Potential students interested in becoming a Phlebotomist can enroll in an online allied health program and earn their certificate in as little as six months.
Working as a phlebotomist can be a fun and rewarding job. You will meet a lot of new people on a day-to-day basis. Becoming a Certified Phlebotomist is a great entry-level position with many potential avenues for advancement.
Occupation Outlook
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of Phlebotomists will grow 22 percent from 2020 to 2030, much faster than the average for all occupations.
As the large baby-boom population ages, the need for blood testing and analysis will likely increase. Demand for phlebotomists will remain high as doctors and other healthcare professionals require bloodwork for study and diagnosis.

Program Overview
The Phlebotomy Technician program prepares individuals to collect blood from clients for the purpose of laboratory analysis.

Students completing this program can sit for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam administered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

Externship Program
Upon completing the online training program, a student is eligible* for our optional Externship. The Externship is a standard 40-hour unpaid rotation. During this Externship, students have a chance to get hands-on experience and practice conducting a variety of procedures on patients with supervision.
As a participant in this Externship, you must agree to provide a resume to their assigned Externship Coordinator no less than three weeks following initial contact. Failure to provide such a resume will result in students not participating in the externship opportunity. In addition, the following terms and conditions apply to the Externship:
By participating in this process, students are entering into an unpaid volunteer externship opportunity which, at no time, constitutes an employee-employer relationship. The facility is under no obligation to continue your clinical experience, nor should you maintain these expectations.
*Students who wish to participate in this course’s optional clinical externship portion must complete their program with a grade of 70% or higher on the final exam and course average, spending at least 50 hours in the course. All externship placements are subject to the availability, scheduling, and staffing needs of the externship sites.
Is an Externship position guaranteed if I successfully complete this program?
We will coordinate an externship for each eligible student at a healthcare organization in their local area. In over eight years of providing this service, we have not had an instance where we could not do this—pandemic or no pandemic. With this said, we cannot guarantee a placement due to circumstances outside our control which include a lack of healthcare organizations located in a rural area, acts of God, situations where healthcare organizations have curtailed their operations due to a pandemic or other cause or in situations where a student chooses not to meet the outlined requirements.
